A quick ferry to the continent could transport fashion divas to the groundbreaking Maison Martin Margiela exhibition in Antwerp in an event to celebrate the fashion house"s 20th anniversary. The company, which was set up by Martin Margiela and Jenny Meirins in Antwerp in 1988 after working with Jean-Paul Gaultier, first established itself on Belgian catwalks in the following October with a dramatically different brand which opposed the designs of other style houses at the time.
The Antwerp Fashion Museum, which is to display his work until February 8th 2009, highlighted the designer"s desire for secrecy in his identity, preferring his fashion items to speak the loudest.
The museum continued: "All interviews are consistently given in the name of the Maison as a whole and no photographs of the designer are distributed - a sharp reaction against the star status that dominated the fashion scene of the 1980s and 1990s."
Lonely Planet described Antwerp as the most underrated destination for tourists in Belgium, with the city effectively mixing old and new values and architectural styles.
