Ferries to France: Antwerp is an underrated city
05.01.2010
People taking ferries to france are close to a European city which offers visitors the chance to truly sample Belgian culture, according to one newspaper, which said great culinary delights can be found there. The Independent said that Antwerp has a special charm and even buildings like the central train station are a wonder to behold.
"Belgium"s hip and sophisticated second city has a strong Flemish heritage and a noticeable lack of concessions to English-speakers (menus and streets signs are mostly incomprehensible), making it feel a long way from home," it stated.
People wanting to get a unique gift for a loved one could also be in luck, with the city boasting a wide range of boutiques and fashion shops.
Antwerp"s fashion star rose to prominence in the 1980s with the emergence of six designers, namely Walter Van Beirendonck, Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Van Saene, Dirk Bikkembergs and Marina Yee, who went onto dominate the fashion world with their avant-garde designs.
