Ferries to Dunkerque: Follow in the Victorians' footsteps
02.11.2009
People taking ferries to Dunkerque can retrace the steps of their Victorian ancestors, according to one newspaper which said that Britons have been flocking to its near neighbour for over a hundred years. The Guardian reported that France was a popular haunt for the Victorians when it listed its top ten retreats that they visited and stood alongside more exotic locations like Shanghai and Egypt.
"Nice was ceded back to French sovereignty and began constructing grand hotels and a promenade which would be named Anglaise for the English tourists who thronged there," it stated.
The newspaper said that aspirational Brits were attracted to the country after the British, French and Spanish royal families holidayed there regularly during the 17th century.
Dawn Page, UK director of Tourism Flanders-Brussels, said that cities such as Bruges and Brussels offer great Christmas attractions, like huge ice rinks, which could interest people considering taking ferries to france.
