Film lovers catching the ferry to Belgium may want to head to Bruges to take in the Cinema Novo Festival. The event, held every year in March, showcases new films from Africa, Asia and Latin America at the Lumiere and the Liberty art house cinema.
Founded in 1984 as the Third World Film Festival, the event has grown to see more than 20,000 visitors from Belgium and abroad attend.
The festival now features more than 60 films shown across 180 screenings and works with other events such as the Rotterdam film festival.
According to the event"s website: "The festival wants to present the film directors from the three continents as skilled world artists and to offer them a platform for their artistic expression."
In addition, it explains that directors which are outside the main concentrations of film production often find it difficult to reach their audiences, especially if they do not follow typical US style.
Productions which won prizes at last year"s event include Frozen by Shivajee Chandrabhushan from India, El Otro by Argentinian director Ariel Rotter and Parrots from Tomer Reiss of Israel.
