Brussels is 'centre of European culture'
19.11.2008
A French writer has changed her mind about the Belgian capital after her first impressions of the city 40 years ago left her cynical about the city, according to news provider France Today.Brigid Grauman said that despite her now-flawed original view of Brussels, it was now a great "multicultural arts centre" which serves as the base for the socio-political interests of Europe, providing an excellent experience for ferry-taking tourists.
She said that a lot had changed in the last 40 years, adding: "In the intervening years, Brussels has become an international city, not only the capital of Belgium but also the headquarters of the European Union and of NATO."
Ms Grauman also noted that even though the cultural heart of Brussels was "chaotic and underfunded", it is a side of the city where there is always something happening, whether it was a packed opera house, or a "first-rate" concert.
Lonely Planet commented that Brussels provided an intriguing mix of both the boring and the bizarre, with the contradictions providing an experience for all types of traveller.
