Ferries to France: Traditional gap years are passé
19.01.2010
People thinking to take a gap year may want to avoid the tried and tested destinations of Australia and Asia and perhaps start with cheap ferries to France, according to one expert, who said that traditional spells abroad have become clichéd and passé.Travel expert Simon Calder said that in 2010 he expects to see young people shunning the standard gap-year countries as they attempt to avoid the crowds of backpackers.
He said, "Don"t go for the standard round the world trip. It used to be when gap years were first "invented", people would go round the world because it was the only way economically that they could ever afford to do that." The expert also added that now people have a much greater say in where they go and what they do.
Ghent Festivities take over much of the medieval centre of the city for ten days during July every year and include parades and jousting tournaments as the destination remembers its past.
