Strike causes traffic chaos in Belgium
06.10.2008
Travel services in Belgium are in chaos today as Eurostar workers are on strike.Services between Brussels and both London and Lille have been disrupted after unions began protesting over the increasing cost of living and the government"s inability to curb inflation.
Unions also say they want to send a clear message to the government before it presents its 2009 budget to parliament on October 14th.
The 24-hour general strike may encourage people to opt for ferry transport to the continent as routes to Germany and the Netherlands have also been affected.
It will also prove to be bad news for the Channel Tunnel train service which spent most of last month on a restricted service due to a fire which engulfed the tunnel.
However, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
Towards the end of September, the Eurostar ran into more trouble after it was revealed that one of one of its trains had broken down due to an electrical fault.
