Ferries to Dunkerque are close to artist's muse

19.01.2010
Holidaymakers taking ferries to Dunkerque are close to an area which helped one of France"s most famous artists overcome a severe case of artist"s block, according to one newspaper.

The Times claimed that Collioure bay in Languedoc is among the best in Europe and helped Matisse find inspiration after he struggled to find a muse for his work.

"So seductive is tiny, cobbled Collioure and its small, rocky bay, history claims it cured Matisse of artist’s block — after he visited in 1905, his colour schemes rocked up a notch and his work was never the same again," it stated.

The newspaper recommended people visit the bay during June and July rather than August when it is crowded with French holidaymakers.

Vacationers taking ferries to france who want to experience some great art while on holiday should visit Nice, according to the Independent, which said the museum of Matisse is a particularly impressive attraction.
