Belgian event offers history lessons
09.06.2009
Families keen to show their little ones just how lucky they are could hop on a ferry to Belgium this summer and teach them all about the sacrifices made by previous generations.Until August 30th the Mariemont Royal Museum is hosting the A Soldier"s Life exhibition, which does exactly what it says on the tin, educating visitors on exactly what the day-to-day existence of the troops during World War I entailed.
The soldier in question is Gustave Groleau, whose experiences are brought to life thanks to an unpublished manuscript written by the man himself.
Mr Groleau served in the Belgian army during the Great War and descriptions, images and drawings are used to get across the horrors that he faced during this period.
There is plenty more in Belgium for those interested in history, with the Re-enactment of the Battle of Waterloo held between June 18th and 21st.
Meanwhile, the Night of the Museums takes place throughout August in Antwerp, allowing holidaymakers to brush up on the past of Belgium well into the small hours of the morning.
