Fall of Berlin Wall is remembered
09.11.2009
People considering heading to Germany via ferry this winter could find themselves in the middle of celebrations which will mark the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago.Hundreds of diplomats and politicians will join in the celebrations which are centred around Berlin, including former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev, the French president Nicolas Sarkozy and British prime minister Gordon Brown.
Culturally astute travellers could be interested in the anniversary events which begin this week with speeches from the former and current European leaders.
"Its majesty lies not in the presence of a structure, but in its absence. The wall is gone. Two Berlins are one. Two Germanys are one. Two Europes are one," Gordon Brown will say.
The Guardian recently said a cycle path that runs alongside the remaining parts of the Berlin Wall is a great place for bike enthusiasts to explore and see some historical sites around the city.
