Cross channel ferries: Tipping can be a difficult process
17.02.2010
People considering taking cross channel ferries need to be aware of the tipping systems of different countries, as they could commit an embarrassing social faux pas, according to one newspaper. The Times stated that tipping can be a difficult part of any trip abroad and advised that people take care to give an appropriate amount of money in the right way.
"Tipping can be socially awkward, cause endless embarrassment and be highly inconsistent and irrational, especially since it is based on the amount of a transaction instead of the quality of service," it stated.
The newspaper added that the basic rules of tipping require that if you are a regular, you give generously to keep staff happy and ensure good service.
In other news, the Times included Ghent in its top ten weekend break roundup and said that the medieval backdrop provides a charming setting for holidaymakers looking to make the most of 48 hours away from it all.
