Escape on a ferry to France at first sign of summer
14.04.2009
People seeing the first signs of summer can head off on an early holiday and take their car to explore France.Anthony Peregrine, writing for the Times, says Brits can leave their conscience at home and take a ferry to france to explore the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of the country.
He says people should take a trip to St Omer but should avoid the usual tourist trap of the Sandelin Museum, instead favouring the gothic cathedral on the edge of town or the war museum of La Coupole.
Other areas tipped by Mr Peregrine are Douai to visit the "grandiose" town hall and the mining museum at Lewarde.
Another less-visited area recommended by the traveller is the west of the Somme region, which has great scenery and the Marquenterre Ornithological Park, with 600 acres of dunes, marsh and lagoons.
People wanting to keep costs low can get a ferry to France but can also get some bargain accommodation deals, according to Sian Williams, country manager UK for trivago.
