Smartphones can improve ferry trips

29.03.2010
People taking cross Channel ferries can use their smartphones to enhance their holiday experience, according to one newspaper, which said there is a wide choice of applications for travellers to choose from.

The Independent reported that people with iPhones and other smartphones will be able to use applications like Your Reality, Augmented and e-Reading to find out information about historical sites or choose from thousands of books while relaxing on a beach.

"Point your phone at a building and see its history or look at a painting and see the Grove Dictionary article on it. In 2010, this revolution in travel information is just beginning," James Governor, an industry analyst with Redmonk, told the newspaper.

The publication added that this year Apples dominance in the smartphone market will be challenged by devices using the new Google Android operating system and this could provide cross Channel ferry travellers even more choice.

People taking cross Channel ferries could soon be watching the French Open, one of greatest European tennis tournaments from a different location as it could be relocated to Disneyland Paris after facing organising problems at its current home of Roland Garros.
