19.12.2008
Brits looking for a post-Christmas break which is more than a little bit different may wish to consider a ferry trip to Belgium. From January 10th until the 12th, the country will hold its Bommel Festival.
The event, which takes place in Ronse, celebrates the Epiphany like nowhere else on Earth, with events including processions of giant puppets.
Crazy Monday, which is held on the first Saturday after the Christian holiday, turns the small area of Flanders into party central, with traditional dress and larger-than-life characters filling the streets.
Meanwhile, for those taking a ferry trip to Belgium in May, the Battle of the Lumecon may be of interest.
This yearly event sees Belgians turn out in their numbers to stage a re-enactment in which Saint George heroically slays a dragon.
As the creature is silenced, participants rush inside in a symbol which marks safety for the town for another 12 months.
