Holidaymakers 'using self-catered accommodation to keep costs low'
16.06.2009
Those taking ferries to france are likely to book self-catered accommodation as a way to cut down the cost of their holiday, an expert asserts.Peter Smith, expert at travelsupermarket.com, claims that the economic downturn means people are avoiding eating out at pricey restaurants and are using their break as an opportunity to explore local produce.
"You might find people are going to local supermarkets more rather than eating out every night, so you get a lot of people self-catering," he explains.
He says the holidaymakers who have taken ferries to France are helping stores see extra trade as more people enjoy a night or two in, enjoying a meal out on the balcony.
Mr Smith claims that this is one of strategies which allows people to continue to go on holiday despite the downturn and he states there is no indication that tourists are being put off going on their annual breaks.
Recent research by Holiday Extras has found seven per cent are being more frugal while on their break, while 15 per cent are continuing to spend whatever they want during their vacation.
