Mobile roaming charges capped for France visitors
02.03.2010
Holidaymakers planning on taking ferries to france will now be able to take advantage of cheaper mobile phone rates thanks to a cap on roaming charges implemented across Europe. The European Union has forced network operators in the UK and abroad to ensure that customers are not charged over a certain limit - 50 (£45) per month when using their mobile phones on holiday.
Coming into force yesterday (March 1st), the ruling aims to stop travellers experiencing unexpectedly high bills, like one holidaymaker from Germany who racked up a £40,000 charge after watching a television programme on his phone.
Neelie Kroes, digital agenda commissioner for the EU, said: "Protection against data roaming bill shocks is a useful step towards building customers" confidence to use mobile networks to surf the internet when travelling around Europe."
Vanessa Fisher, spokesperson for the Ski Club of Great Britain, recently said that more people could be getting cross channel ferries to ski resorts in France thanks to an increase in their popularity among Brits this year.
