Rise of the 'paliday'

22.06.2009
A growing number of Britons are choosing to save money on their holidays by staying with friends and family, a new survey has revealed.

The so-called "paliday" is on the rise in Britain, with many choosing to spend money only on travelling to their destination, such as on ferries to france, where they may visit friends and relatives.

According to the study from thetrainline.com, 45 per cent of families claim to spend less than £600 in two weeks when holidaying with friends and family, which represents a saving of around 77 per cent on the cost of an average two-week summer holiday.

"Our survey shows that "palidays" are on the rise and with rail travel up by almost 50 per cent this summer, we anticipate many people to be spending their breaks with friends and family in the UK this year," said Ben Pearson, commercial director at thetrainline.com.

The current recession has forced many people to reconsider their holiday plans in recent times and this summer has seen more people choosing to avoid paying out money on flights, instead choosing more economical methods such as taking cross channel ferries.
