'Combine sightseeing and shopping' on a ferry trip to north-east France

31.10.2008
Christmas shoppers should travel by ferry in order to combine their purchasing with a touch of French culture, it has been claimed.

Writing in the Birmingham Mail, journalist Wayne Stackhouse said his trip from Calais to the Cote d"Opal region of France allowed him to the sample the culinary and cultural delights of the area around Boulogne, while picking up winter bargains.

"Some of the attractions include the cathedral, old town walls, belfry and - dating from more contemporary times - the impressive Nausicaa French national sea life centre," he wrote.

Mr Stackhouse went on to mention shops including Chocolat de Beussent which has its own chocolate factory, alcohol emporium Le Chais and patisserie L"llot d"Vert.

He added that the area is particularly worth a visit this time of year to remember how this part of France suffered during the First World War.

This week, Tony Dawe of the Times highlighted the approach of the November 11th services in northern France.
